Dear Red Hatters,

No sooner had last week's Friday broadcast gone out than the emails started to arrive. Although I said she did, Gertrude Stein did not write "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"; William Shakespeare did – in "Romeo and Juliet". Gertrude Stein is known for a different comment involving roses: "A rose is a rose is a rose." By no means did I mind the corrections; I appreciated them..... But I, English major that I was, used to know this stuff!

So I spent a few minutes worrying about my memory. I've been doing this more and more often these days. Thank goodness, most of my friends have the same problem. As we get older, our powers of recollection, like the old gray mare, "ain't what {they} used to be". This can be disturbing, even downright irritating. Who among us has not gone into a room and then just stood there, looking around and trying to recall what we came in there for? Who hasn't blanked while trying to summon up a familiar name, a song title, or a phone number?

The experts all tell us that this is just a natural byproduct of aging, not usually a sign of something worse. So we might as well treat the situation with humor. There's a little Italian restaurant in town that sells black shirts declaring "Fuhgeddaboudit!" in big white letters. I think I'll get one. But maybe I should change it to "FuhGOTaboudit"?

In friendship,
Sue Ellen and Debra, and all of us at Hatquarters

Congratulations, Laura!

RHS At AARP's "Vegas @50+" Convention

The Red Hat Society exhibit at AARP's annual "Vegas @ 50+" Convention was a popular attraction at the Sands Expo, with many Red Hatters stopping by to say hello. Members who dressed in colors and brought a friend to sign up even received free gifts. And special thanks to local Las Vegas queens that volunteered as ambassadors to help staff our booth! Actor Martin Landau of "Mission Impossible" visited us as did The Alley Cats, a doo-wop group performing at a nearby stage that sang a song for us at our booth. Celebrity speakers ranged from Magic Johnson to Maya Angelou, with evening concerts by Gloria Estefan, Tito Puente Jr, and Kool & The Gang. Our Purple Princess of PR Bella Lagmay-Funk was captured on video when the artists shook her hand from the stage and she and CEO Lady Bug Debra Granich were featured on AARP's video dancing front and center! What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right? Click here to see the photo gallery!

Share Your Passion for Afternoon Tea with Lady Gail!

Lady Gail at the Teahouse Times has a special message for Hatters!

"Every two months, I will post something fun and interesting about tea or afternoon tea here on the Friday Broadcast. And a bunch of us are sharing great tea time fun on the QMB under Hobbies/Afternoon Tea as well! One of my favorite things about tea time is a nice pot of tea along with a warm scone, jam and clotted cream - otherwise known as Cream Tea. What is Clotted Cream or Double Devon? Both Clotted Cream (55% fat) and Double Devon (48% fat) are made from cream separated from Devonshire cow's milk. Devon is a county in southwest England, famous for the thick creams they produce through their farms and dairies. Clotted cream is made by pouring milk from high-fat bred cows into shallow pans; after settling, the cream rises to the top."
