Evening Tequila Toast - The Legend of Arriba, Abajo

5:30pm

Every culture and region has rich stories of love, courage and tradition, the Sonoran Desert is no exception. Join your Sisters as we gather on the Salud terrace to watch the sunset and experience the nightly hotel tradition—the tequila toast. The legend of Arriba, Abajo begins with the tradition of a man asking his beloved’s father for her hand in marriage. Mexican revolutionary General Pancho Villa desperately wanted to marry his true love Juanita. Juanita’s father, Don Pablo feared losing his daughter to such a man and devised a plan to keep that from happening: a tequila drinking challenge. To hear the rest of the legend, join us for this unique experience where we feature one of our more than 150 artisan Tequilas and a complimentary toast: “Arriba, Abajo, al Centro, al Dentro, Salud!” (Up, down, out and in.) The perfect way to celebrate with old friends and create new ones—“we are all related.”

Optional Parade Experience: Join 2014 Hatter of the Year Marilyn Cresci and her Chapterettes from The Red Hat Vintage Ladies for the annual Tucson Veteran’s Day Parade. A yearly tradition for local Hatters, this parade experience is a special one because of the very special bus that the girls walk beside and/or ride in. Hailed from England and used at Queen Elizabeth’s 25th Inauguration, this bus is now owned by Demitri Downing. How did this British piece of history make its way into the Tucson Veteran’s Day Parade? Demitri was in search of a mechanic to restore the engine back to its former glory. One afternoon, Demitri ran into Clifford, a homeless veteran, who had the mechanical know-how to do the job. Demitri moved Clifford into his back house (all expenses paid, of course) in exchange for working on the bus’ engine. Clifford developed cancer during his work on the bus and died just shortly after completing the job. Demitri was so moved by the experience, that he felt strongly that this bus would stand as a testament to the amazing men and women of the military who so valiantly served (and continue to serve) their countries.

  • 9:00am: Photo Shoot With Queen Elizabeth’s 25th Inauguration Bus In Front Of The Hotel
  • 9:30am: Depart for Parade. Please arrive at Alameda and Grande Ave. by 10am.
  • 10:00am: Join Hatters from the Tucson, AZ area for a meet and greet in the parade line up. Although completely optional (but a whole lot of fun), feel free to assist the ladies with decorating the bus for the parade.
  • 11:00am-12:00pm: Parade the streets of Tucson in the annual Veteran’s Day Parade.
  • 12:00pm: Either return to the hotel to have lunch on your own, or enjoy some of Tucson’s local eateries. The choice is yours!

Parade Transport Options: Hail a taxi, call on Uber or contact Marilyn Cresci, 2014 Hatter of the Year, to coordinate riding to and from the parade in the historic bus (30 spaces available) or with a local AZ Hatter who is willing to carpool. RHS will not be providing transportation to and from the parade route for this optional event.
