1. Multivitamins

There are multiple reasons why multivitamins are a very popular choice. We like to think of multis as the basis for your supplement routine, since multivitamins aim to help provide the essential vitamins and minerals needed in a single daily serving.

But just like those stylish red hats, one size does not fit all. Multivitamins typically come in different formulations for varying nutritional needs. For instance, there are senior-specific multis that take into consideration the health concerns of people over the age of 50, such as heart health.** There are also more specialized formulations for senior men or senior women, which focus on the very specific nutritional needs of these groups.

2. Fish Oil

Fish oils contain heart healthy nutrients you need called omega-3 fatty acids.** EPA and DHA are the important fatty acids that help benefit the heart, joints and skin.**

If fish isn’t what you typically order during your Hatter luncheons, not to worry. Omega-3 fatty acids are derived from many sources. You can choose from cod liver, salmon, and krill oil. Our cod liver oil provides an abundant source of Vitamins A and D that help maintain strong bones and a healthy immune system.** In addition, Vitamin A assists with eyesight and skin maintenance, and Vitamin D helps maintain strong bones.** And to think grandma had it right all those years ago with her spoonfuls of cod liver oil!

Depending on your preference, you can get liquid fish oil, softgels, chewable tablets and even gummy supplements. Puritan’s Pride fish oil supplements are all purified to eliminate mercury.

3. Vitamin D

Sunlight provides a good source of Vitamin D, but many of us aren’t spending enough time in the sun these days to provide adequate levels of this important vitamin. Sounds like we are in need of a nice girls’ trip to a tropical location!

In addition, very few foods in nature contain Vitamin D, making it more important to find alternative supplements. Many health experts recommend that adults get approximately 2000 IU of Vitamin D every day for optimal health benefits.**

Vitamin D is available in many forms including tablets, liquids, chewables, and softgels, giving you lots of options to get your daily dose.

4. Probiotics

You may have noticed “contains probiotics” added to some of the yogurt labels at your local grocery store. In fact, the United States has the fastest growth rate of probiotics use. While probiotics (which means “for life”) may seem like a new health trend, their discovery goes back to the early 20th century.

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that are found naturally in the digestive system. Not the kind of “friendly” where they don red hats and socialize with their sisters, but friendly nonetheless.

Did you know that a large percentage of the body’s immune system is located in the gastrointestinal tract? Probiotic supplements help supply the gut with beneficial bacteria to support healthy immune function, too.**

5. Cranberry

Cranberries aren’t just a side dish served with turkey on Thanksgiving. The tart red berries are filled with goodness that can be taken all year round. Not only are they a source of free-radical fighting antioxidants, but they also promote urinary tract health.** This also helps to maintain bladder health.**

Fun fact: Cranberries promote urinary health in both men and women.** So while cranberries have historically been associated with women’s health, Hatters can let the men in their lives know it’s for them, too.

6. Neuro PS

As all Hatters know, wellness means nourishing body, mind and spirit. You can start with trying out new hobbies, reading more, engaging in social Hatter activities and maintaining a healthy diet that provides essential nutrients for the brain. As far as supplements go, Neuro-PS® is one source you can turn to for brain nutrition.**

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a naturally occurring substance that's a key component of the brain.** It plays a role in neurotransmitter release and ion transport.** Neuro-PS® helps replenish Phosphatidylserine levels, which may decline with age.** It also aids brain function and supports a healthy mind.**

8. Collagen

They say that true beauty comes from within, and we couldn’t agree more!

Collagen is a protein that provides healthy support for skin, which is important because skin collagen may decrease with age. Collagen is also an important part of your body's structural system. Think of it as the equivalent to a car's shock absorbers - a cushion that absorbs the impact on your joints during everyday activities. Collagen helps support joint comfort and mobility, allowing you to stay active.**

So if you want to look and feel good inside and out, collagen can provide beneficial support.**

9. Vitamin B-12

If you already associate Vitamin B-12 with energy support, then you’re on the right track.** Vitamin B-12 aids the body in converting food into energy, and also supports heart and nervous system health.** B-12 can be obtained from animal sources, but it’s not found in vegetables in any significant amount, so some vegetarians and vegans may rely on supplements for their B-12 intake.

In addition, B-12 may not be as readily absorbable by the digestive system as we age, so it’s recommended that adults over 50 years of age get most of the recommended intake of B-12 from fortified foods and nutritional supplements.1

10. Melatonin

Melatonin has gained well deserved popularity because of its main claim to fame: Melatonin helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.** What could be better than that?

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that is produced in the body and is closely involved in the natural sleep cycle.** Because inefficient sleep can affect energy and mood, melatonin is a terrific choice if you experience occasional sleeplessness or jet lag, or if you want to improve your quality of rest.**

We all know how important it is to be well rested for those fun late night activities with your sisters!
