REACH YOUR GOALS FASTER

In my coaching practice, clients often ask how do I reach my goal faster?

My answer? Momentum.

Momentum is the energy that carries any thought or idea through to fruition. It’s the engine in your car of life.

It is a crucial point in determining if there will be success or failure when you receive an idea.

If it is directed deliberately, momentum will build energy bridging the gap from having the idea to bringing it to fruition.

When you doubt, or don’t trust your ideas, it puts a kink in the flow, slowing down the accomplishment of your goal. This is much like folding a water hose and slowing the flow of water.

Utilizing momentum, you choose the speed limits of your life. You decide how fast you want to take the curves and switchbacks.

Here’s how it works:

Generalizing – Slow it down

To slow your momentum, imagine rough, mountain roads with switchbacks around every turn, twists and turns, you probably wouldn’t feel safe driving100 mph across that treacherous terrain.

Same goes when you start to feel a wobble, or you hear the voice of your evil twin (admit it we all have one – it’s why we’re superheroes – we use our power for good not evil) taunting you, this is when you want to direct your momentum the way you would drive on that precarious mountain road. You want to slow your roll, make sure you have an aerial view, keeping the big picture (ie: your safe arrival) in the forefront of your mind, moment to moment.

Detailing – Speed it up

To speed up momentum towards a goal consider the autobahn in Europe. The road is mapped out ahead of you and smooth pavements. You feel great driving your master crafted vehicle at higher speeds, you know the destination, and now you are ensconced in the experience of feeling the road, paying attention to every little detail, other drivers, the lines, the curves, the shoulder, aware and ready to adjust your trajectory in a heartbeat.

On days when you feel things are going your way – that shows your alignment is directed towards your goals, the more you focus on every detail of what is going great about your day, the faster your momentum increases (just like the autobahn) and the better you will feel. This is when the opportunity comes a’nockin’.

When you first start working deliberately with your momentum you may find the road is a bit bumpy getting started, but just like riding a bike once you start pedaling it’s easier to steer. So, while you may wobble from side to side, just keep pedaling, it will soon straighten out!

And yes, there were times I didn’t realize my focus needed readjusting until I was already in the “weeds” lost, frustrated with no map. Trust me, getting out of those dead ends took time, energy and support from my community.

Most people believe momentum is built through force – pushing something away, dragging it towards you, making it happen, exerting energy. Truth is momentum can be your friend and a great tool if you know how to use it. If you direct your momentum (by directing your thought) towards your goals, your dreams, your desires you will HAVE success.

When you hit roadblocks, an irritable partner, a prickly boss or a mistake in your perfect presentation; that’s the time to practice working with your momentum. This is where the magic happens! You choose whether to speed it up – making everything bigger or slow it down so you can redirect the course.

OR an alternate route:

When that irritable partner shows up, you can navigate your momentum like that back-mountain road, taking a general and higher perspective, like the eagle soaring above. So instead of jumping into their momentum by getting agitated, trying to make them feel better or my personal favorite – trying to fix it, you focus on the situation from a higher perspective, instead of agreeing with what is making them angry, you see them as something other than what they are exhibiting in that moment.  You’ll see that momentum rules!

TRAVELERS' TOP TIPS TO PACK SMART

Advice from the traveler community on their best-ever packing tips. Here’s what they had to say.

Pack light to travel light. If you can manage with a carry-on, do it. Try taking half of the things you need and twice the money. You can make buying a few new items a fun part of the adventure.

Pack a sleep mask and ear plugs. These can come in handy on a plane, train or in your hotel room.

Capitalize on empty suitcase space. Roll your clothes, instead of folding them. Stuff socks, underwear, and accessories inside of shoes. Leave no space unused.

Keep a sarong or pashmina in your carry-on. They can be used as a blanket on the plane, a scarf if it’s cold or a shawl on an evening out.

Bag it. Kitchen sandwich bags can be used to hold your accessories, vacuum pack bags can be space savers, and trash bags have multiple uses (laundry bag, shoe covers).

Skip airport snacks and bring your own. You can save yourself a bit of money and keep your hunger at bay in case you have a delayed flight.

Create compartments. Two words: packing cube. If you are visiting more than one city during your trip, packing cubes will keep your suitcase organized and save you from having to pack and unpack.

Share your packing space. Traveling with a girlfriend? Split your clothes between two suitcases on the off chance one of them gets lost during the flight.

Bring a multi-socket extension cord. Although newer hotels have USB ports in rooms, it’s best to have an extra outlet to charge all of your electronics at once.

Make photocopies before leaving home. If you’re traveling out of the country, make two photocopies of your passport. Use your smartphone to take pictures of your car in the airport’s parking garage and do the same for your luggage and its contents in case it gets lost.

Consider this: Wear old t-shirts, pants, underwear, and socks and throw them away on the trip after you wear them. That way your luggage is lighter and you have room to purchase items on your trip"

Forgot your toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, deodorant? Check with the front desk of your hotel… they’ve always got small samples available.

SOMEDAY IS TODAY

A wise man named Rudolfo Costa once said “Erase from your vocabulary the word ‘someday.’  Do not save things for ‘special occasions.’  Take into account the fact that every day is special.  Every day is a gift that we must appreciate and be thankful for”... Live every day to the fullest and savor every minute of it.”

He offered these illustrations of his point:  “Wear your attractive clothes, wear your nice perfume, use your fine silverware and dishes, and drink from your expensive crystal glasses...”  


The key idea here is to make use of the good things in your life.  I’m sure there are plenty of us who find ourselves a little short of expensive crystal or fine silverware.  But we probably all have possessions that we treat as too nice or too special to use right now. The late humorist, Erma Bombeck, wrote about a woman who was given the gift of a gorgeous, wildly expensive lace slip.  She put off wearing it because there was never an occasion special enough.  She eventually wore it – in her coffin.  I know, that’s a jarring example, but it certainly makes the point.  The poor woman should have enjoyed this gift by using it.  It did no one (especially her) any good wrapped in tissue paper in a nice box – in a drawer.

It’s not about “stuff” itself; it’s about making use of what you have while you can.  What about our gifts and talents?  You can have all the potential in the world but it will come to nothing if you never unleash those latent talents and use them!  If you do happen to have fine crystal and dishes, have people to dinner.  If you have a talent, like quilt-making, make quilts as love gifts.  As an artist I can say that the art pieces that have made me the happiest were those made as gifts for people I love.  All of this circles back to this:  saving anything for “someday” is almost certainly preventing someone’s enjoyment.  If it involves using a talent or a possession to bless other people it will result in warm feelings all around.  And that kind of warm feeling is called “fulfillment.”

7 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR MORNING ROUTINE SUPER PRODUCTIVE

1. Stay off social media. If you want to be super productive in your morning routine, the key is to stay off of social media. Once you log in, it’s so hard to log off. Unless social media is part of your job, avoid logging in at any cost in the morning.

2. Make a list for yourself. Sometimes you’re not super productive because you don’t know what you should be doing. Instead of wondering what’s next, make yourself a list. Crossing something off of your list always feels good, doesn’t it?  

3. Eat a good breakfast. Another way to be super productive in the morning is to actually eat breakfast. Don’t skip out on fueling your body what it needs to survive.  

4. Stay off your phone. Unless you need to be on your phone for business purposes, try to avoid it in the morning. Just like social media, phones can also suck your time away.

5. Prep the night before. Sometimes a little prep the night before can help make your morning routine run more smoothly. For example, you can lay out your clothing for the next day. Thinking ahead is always a time saver and can motivate you to be more productive.  

6. Try to be positive. Keep in mind that you’re human, so things are bound to go wrong. You can’t get upset when things go wrong, instead, you need to have a good attitude about it all. You can have a good attitude by trying to let things go that aren’t going your way. Positivity always gets you further.

7. Jump right in. Some people waste time in the morning because they cannot decide what they need to do first. In order to be super productive in the morning, jump right in. Sometimes you just need to get started in order to start rolling.

Being super productive in your morning routine comes down from to not getting distracted, taking care of yourself, and not fiddling around.
