The Plumerix Chronicles - May 2026 Edition
Published
May has always held a certain tenderness for me. Perhaps it’s because the world finally feels fully alive flowers in bloom, longer days, soft thunderstorms rolling in. Or perhaps it’s because this is the month we celebrate mothers and mothering in all its beautiful forms.
And in the Red Hat Society, I have discovered more forms of mothering than I ever knew existed.
This month’s theme, “Celebrating a Mother’s Magic,” isn’t just about biological motherhood. It's about the kind of loving guidance, fierce protection, patient wisdom, and gentle encouragement women naturally extend to each other. It’s about the sisters who show up with soup when you’re sick. The ones who listen without judgment. The ones who say, “Sit down, baby, I’ll take it from here.” The ones who hold you together when you feel like falling apart.
I've lost count of the number of times I’ve watched Hatters mother each other fixing hats, wiping lipstick smudges, giving pep talks, calling to check in, sending cards, sharing wisdom, or simply offering warmth. They taught me that mothering is not a title it’s an energy. A way of moving through the world with care. These gestures may seem small, but they create the kind of magic the world desperately needs.
And now, in this Society, I see that energy everywhere. Some of you raised large families.
Some raised none, but nurtured communities.
Some mother through mentorship. Some mother through leadership.
Some mother friends through difficult seasons. Some mother through creativity or service.
Some mother by simply showing up with a joyful spirit.
And some of you have nurtured yourselves healing past wounds, reclaiming your identity, or rediscovering your inner child. That, too, is a form of mothering.
In this 250th anniversary year, with so much attention turned toward history, I can’t help but think about how women have been the quiet architects of families, towns, traditions, and nations. While men wrote documents, women held everything else together. Their stories may not appear in history books, but they shaped history nonetheless. Discover Their Stories
This month, I encourage chapters to reflect on the women who mothered them into who they are family members, teachers, friends, neighbors, or Hatters who stepped into your life at the exact right moment. Celebrate the magic they brought into your world.
And for those who find May bittersweet those missing mothers, children, partners, or years gone by, I hope you feel wrapped in the warmth of this sisterhood. Because here, no one is alone. We mother and mend each other as needed. That’s the beauty of our Society.
I have always believed that mothering is its own kind of magic. It’s the magic that keeps us going, keeps us connected, keeps us grounded, and keeps us believing in each other. And in a world that often feels chaotic, women’s magic--your magic is steady and sacred.
So this May, I raise my hat to every woman who has ever offered comfort, encouragement, guidance, laughter, patience, or love.
Your magic is felt.
Your magic is honored.
Your magic is celebrated.
Happy Mother’s Magic Month, dear sisters.
